How the Heating Works

One of the bigger changes with the ILUMA i series compared to older IQOS devices is how the stick is actually heated. Earlier IQOS devices used a small blade that would go into the tobacco stick to heat it from the inside. The ILUMA i series moved away from that. Instead, it uses induction heating, meaning the device heats the stick from around it rather than piercing it with anything. This is also why Terea sticks are made specifically for these newer devices and won't work with the older blade based ones.

In practical terms, people tend to find this version easier to keep clean since there's no blade to worry about, and there's less chance of a stick getting damaged when it's inserted, since nothing is piercing through it. It's a different mechanism than what earlier IQOS users may be used to, so it can take a little adjusting if someone is switching over from an older device.
